ACTIVITIES

The Club caters for a wide range of interests within the sport of canoeing. It is a family based club that is reflected by the variety of events in which members participate.

COACHING | ADVENTURE | COMPETITION | RECREATION | OPEN CANOEING

COACHING
Courses are available in most aspects of the sport from beginners upwards. Beginners are welcome and will be directed on to an appropriate course. Members can participate in regular courses to develop their techniques and skills or they can paddle independently. Courses are available to suit particular groups either by interest or age. Courses are arranged in response to demand from other youth and adult organisations. During the winter coaching is available during the pool sessions. Coaching at levels one to four is available to members on a Club night (Thursdays)

The Club has a Community Sports Coach (Canoeing) based at its premises who offers regular and frequent 'After School Clubs' and other paddlesport activity for the Youth members, ably assisted by the remainder of the Club's Coaching Team.

The Club’s Coaching Structure reflects the activities and interests of the Club members. Any volunteer interested in helping in a coaching capacity will receive lots of support and help from the Club and Coaching Team. (go to the top)

ADVENTURE
Take the challenge of moving water and wild water paddling skills and/or canoe-camping on the Welsh Borders. There are occasional visits to local sites and further afield to the River Tryweryn. Multi-day journeys are a feature of the Club’s activities. These may be simple local journeys, perhaps aimed at the Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition Section, using the Open Canoe as the mode of transport. Journeys sometimes take place in more distant parts such as the Great Glen, or even abroad to Belgium and France. These journeys can be physically demanding and/or family orientated. (go to the top)

COMPETITION
The Club has a well-established race training and competition programme which can cater for beginners through to national standard paddlers. Regular training sessions are available (see ‘Club Nights’) and the Club supports paddlers to attend local, regional and national events. In addition the Club organises events of it own based on idyllic waters at it’s Club site. Indeed the annual ‘Burton Canoe Marathon’ is well established on the national calendar. The Club provides all equipment to support paddlers’ early stages of development. Age is not a barrier to paddling. It is more a matter of physique. The Club has a good stock of junior sized equipment. If a young person is particularly keen to paddle the Club will do its best to acquire the correct size of equipment but storage space is not unlimited! Support for youngsters continues into their teens and beyond. (go to the top)

Currently the Club is able to support paddlers in marathon, sprint and wild water racing, and hopes to develop slalom racing in the not too distant future. There are several ‘Lightnings’ and ‘Wavehoppers’ to support youth paddlers in flat water and wild water racing respectively. There are frequent visits to regional events and to the National Water Sports Centre at Nottingham. (go to the top)

RECREATION
Local slow moving rivers and canals have much to offer. From gentle meandering through the Staffordshire and Derbyshire countryside to family paddles and canal-side pub lunches! There are plenty of opportunities to unwind, de-stress and chill-out in pleasant relaxing surroundings. There are miles and miles of local rivers, plus the canal network, from which to choose. OPEN CANOEING
Open Canoeing has been a very popular branch of the sport for many years and several family groups have purchased their own open canoes and equipment. There have been numerous tours of waters in Scotland and Wales. (go to the top)
